How the task works
You are given a list of headings (usually labelled i, ii, iii …) and asked to match one to each paragraph or section of the passage. There are always more headings than paragraphs, so some headings are never used — you cannot rely on elimination alone. Each heading captures a paragraph's central idea, not a fact buried inside it.
The detail trap
The wrong heading is often one that matches a single sentence in the paragraph — a name, an example, a statistic. The right heading captures what the whole paragraph is mainly about. Always ask: what is the point of this paragraph, not what is mentioned in it?
A repeatable method
- 1Read the paragraph for its main idea — the topic sentence (often first or last) usually carries it.
- 2Summarise that idea in three or four of your own words before you look at the headings.
- 3Now scan the heading list for the one that matches your summary, not the one that shares a keyword with the paragraph.
- 4Cross off used headings to keep the list manageable, but remember unused headings are expected.
- 5Do the paragraphs you're confident about first; a hard paragraph is easier once the obvious ones are gone.
- 6If two headings seem to fit, pick the broader one that covers the whole paragraph, not the narrower detail.

Timing and order
Matching Headings often appears as the first task for a passage, which tempts people to do it first and slowly. Consider skimming the whole passage once for gist, answering any other question types you can locate quickly, and then returning to headings with a feel for how the passage is organised. Unlike most Reading tasks, headings are not in a fixed passage order — each is judged on its own paragraph.
